Guide

The BMW Café Racer

What makes a café racer

Café racers originated in England in the 60s: lightweight, fast motorcycles tuned for sportiness. Typical features include clip-on handlebars, a short single-seat tail with a cowl, rear-set footrests, and a slim, elongated silhouette. The BMW boxer engine, with its cylinders protruding from the sides, gives them an unmistakable look.

The best base for a BMW café racer

The most popular models are the Twinshock R80 and R100 – or the compact R65. For those who prefer something more unconventional, there is the K100.

The most important café racer parts

  • Café racer tail conversion kits with TÜV approval for twin-shock and monolever models.
  • Clip-on handlebars (36 and 41 mm) and matching triple clamps.
  • Seat foam and base plates for custom cowl seats.
  • Footrest relocation kits for a sporty riding position.
  • Matching exhaust systems with ABE (general operating permit).

FAQ

Questions about Café Racer

Can't find your question? Use our parts inquiry form – we will respond personally.

Which BMW is best suited as a café racer?

Die Twinshock-Modelle R80 und R100 bis 1984 sind die Klassiker. Die R65 ist kompakter und leichter. Für einen eigenständigen Look ist die K100 eine spannende Alternative.

Can I still take a passenger with a 1-person tail section?

Nein. Mit einem 1-Personen-Heck wird das Motorrad auf einen Sitzplatz umgetragen. Wer flexibel bleiben will, wählt ein 2-Personen-Kit mit Stufe.

Do clip-on handlebars require registration?

Generally yes, as the handlebar shape and seating position change. Our triple clamps for clip-on handlebars come with a TÜV certificate, which makes registration easier.

Do you build complete café racers?

Yes – take a look at our Café Racer Concept Bikes or ask us directly via our contact page.
