Converting the BMW R100 – The Big Boxer as a Custom Bike

The R100 is the most powerful air-cooled BMW boxer. If you don't want to sacrifice torque during your build, this is the ideal base – complete with the right TÜV-certified parts.

The R100 is the big sister of the R80: the same good-natured boxer technology, but with nearly a liter of displacement and noticeably more punch. For anyone who wants a build with character and performance.

Why the R100 is a first-class base for a build

  • Most power in the Airhead family: the 980 cc boxer delivers the strongest torque of all air-cooled BMW two-cylinder engines.
  • Same parts ecosystem as the R80: practically all 2-valve custom parts also fit the R100.
  • Iconic look & robust technology.

Which R100 do you have? Variants & frames

  • R100 / S / RS / RT (Twinshock, up to approx. 1984): the best base for a purist café racer. Faired RS/RT models are excellent for "stripping down" into a clean roadster.
  • R100 Monolever (from approx. 1985): easy to customize, many compatible rear-end parts.
  • R100 R / late GS (Paralever): technically top-tier, but more complex to build cleanly.

R100 build styles

R100 Café Racer

More displacement, more of a statement. A classic: building a naked café racer out of a faired R100 RS.

R100 Roadster

The confident everyday custom: uncluttered, classic, with rich performance.

R100 Scrambler

With a robust chassis and high-mounted exhaust, even the R100 becomes a rugged scrambler.

Frequently asked questions about the R100 (FAQ)

Is the R100 worth it compared to the R80?

If you value maximum torque, yes. Technically and visually very similar, the R100 has more displacement and punch.

Can I convert a faired R100 RS/RT into a café racer?

Yes – it's a popular conversion. The fairing gives way to a clean, naked look.

Do R80 custom parts also fit the R100?

As a rule, yes – the deciding factor is the frame type (Twinshock/Monolever/Paralever).
