Guide

The BMW R75 rebuild

The classic among conversion bases

With the /5 series, BMW repositioned the boxer engine in 1969: new frame, electric starter, telescopic fork. The R75 was the top model of the series and is still known today for its silky-smooth engine performance. As a base for customization, it impresses with its classic proportions and chrome charm – perfect for a 70s-style café racer.

/5, /6 or /7 – the differences

  • R75/5 (1969–1973): Front drum brake, short swingarm on early models (later lengthened).
  • R75/6 (1973–1976): Front disc brake, 5-speed transmission, revised instruments.
  • R75/7 (1976–1977): More angular tank and new cylinders, produced for a short time only.

The specific version is important for rear conversions, triple clamps, and brakes – our product descriptions always state the applicable model years.

The most important conversion parts for the R75

  • 36 mm triple clamps with TÜV approval for clip-on or tubular handlebars.
  • Twin-shock rear conversion kits in café racer, roadster, or stepped styles – with TÜV approval.
  • 2-into-2 exhaust systems with ABE (general operating permit), also available in bobber style.
  • Sport brake discs for the ATE swinging caliper.

FAQ

Questions about BMW R75

Can't find your question? Use our parts inquiry form – we will respond personally.

Do R80 and R100 twin-shock parts fit the R75?

A great many. Triple clamps, tail conversion kits, exhaust systems, and brake discs for the twin-shock models from R75 to R100 have been developed together. Our product titles list all compatible models.

Is it worth converting an R75/5?

The /5 is a sought-after classic. Those who value originality tend to restore it. However, it makes a fantastic base for a café racer or roadster – ideally with a reversible conversion, using parts that fit the original mounting points.

Does the engine need to be converted for unleaded fuel?

For older boxer engines, we recommend a cylinder head overhaul with hardened valve seats. This allows the engine to run permanently on unleaded fuel. We offer this service in our workshop.

Can I also get advice for my R75?

Of course. Send us photos and the year of manufacture via the parts inquiry – we will let you know which parts fit.
