What an ABE means
The General Operating Permit (ABE) is issued for a component that may be installed on the vehicles specified therein without further inspection. You do not need to have the part registered – simply carry the ABE (or an excerpt) with you and present it during an inspection. Parts with a TÜV certificate, on the other hand, must be officially approved.
Briefly explained: ABE
| Document | ABE (General Operating Permit) |
|---|---|
| Approval | not required |
| Requirement | carry ABE with you |
| Prerequisite | vehicle listed in the ABE, installation according to specifications |
| Typical parts | exhaust, shock absorbers, brake discs |
| Difference | parts certificate requires inspection and registration |
What you need to look out for
- Vehicle must be listed in the ABE – check model and year of manufacture.
- Installation as specified, without modifications to the part.
- Observe requirements, e.g., combination with specific components.
- Carry the ABE with you – digitally or printed.

FAQ
Questions about ABE
Can't find your question? Use our parts inquiry form – we will respond personally.
Do I need to have a part with an ABE registered?
Nein, solange dein Fahrzeug in der ABE aufgeführt ist und du die Auflagen einhältst. Die ABE musst du mitführen.
Is a digital copy of the ABE sufficient?
Meist ja – ein gut lesbares Foto oder PDF auf dem Handy wird in der Regel akzeptiert. Sicherer ist ein Ausdruck unter der Sitzbank.
Does the ABE lose its validity if I modify the part?
Ja. Wird das Teil verändert oder anders eingebaut als vorgeschrieben, erlischt die ABE und es ist eine Einzelabnahme nötig.
Does the tuning need to be adjusted after installing an exhaust with ABE?
Not mandatory, but often useful – especially for carbureted boxer engines. We perform tuning on our dynamometer.
